Match the monitor to the graphics card and the console you actually own. Resolution and refresh rate only pay off when something can feed them: 1920 × 1080 at 180 Hz is an easy target for a mid-range card, while 2560 × 1440 at 240 Hz, or 4K at 240 Hz, asks for a much stronger one. For a PS5 or an Xbox Series X, look for HDMI 2.1 on the spec sheet: it is the port that carries 4K at 120 Hz from a console.
Panel type is the next decision. IPS is the safe choice for a bright room and long hours of desktop work. OLED and QD-OLED panels switch pixels in about 0.03 ms and show true black, but their brightness figures are lower (250 to 275 nits on the models we list), and static images can cause burn-in, so read what the warranty says about it.
Then check the details that shape daily use: adaptive sync (FreeSync or G-Sync Compatible) so the picture does not tear when the frame rate drops, a stand with height adjustment or a VESA mount, and the inputs, since some monitors have only one HDMI port.
It depends on the frame rate your graphics card reaches in the games you play. For most players, 144 to 180 Hz is a clear step up from 60 Hz, and 240 Hz or more pays off in competitive shooters when the PC can deliver those frames. If the card cannot keep up, a higher refresh rate on the box makes little difference on screen.
It is if you want true black and the fastest pixel response, and your room is not very bright. OLED and QD-OLED panels respond in about 0.03 ms. The trade-offs are lower brightness on full white screens and the risk of burn-in from static elements such as taskbars or game HUDs, so check what the warranty covers before you buy.
Only if you want 4K at 120 Hz or VRR from the console. HDMI 2.1 is the port that carries those signals; over HDMI 2.0 a PS5 runs 4K at up to 60 Hz. Check the exact version on the maker's spec sheet, because some monitors list HDMI without saying which one.
