Gaming headsets and headphones
Check compatibility before anything else. A headset with a USB cable or a 2.4 GHz receiver works on PC and PlayStation, but an Xbox only accepts headsets made for Xbox Wireless or plugged into the 3.5 mm jack on its controller. Some models are sold in separate PlayStation and Xbox versions, so make sure the listing names your console.
Then think about how you play. Battery life on the wireless headsets we list goes from about 30 to 300 hours, and some add Bluetooth so you can take a phone call while the game keeps running. If you talk in party chat or stream, the microphone deserves attention: a boom you can detach or flip up to mute is easier to live with than a fixed one.
Last comes comfort for long sessions: weight, how tightly it clamps, and ear pads in memory foam or breathable fabric. Virtual surround is a software effect, and Windows Sonic on PC or Tempest 3D Audio on PS5 already give it to any stereo headset, so a 7.1 label on the box is not a reason to pay more.
Not always. PS5 and PC accept most USB and 2.4 GHz headsets, but an Xbox only works with headsets made for Xbox Wireless or with a 3.5 mm cable plugged into the controller. That is why some models come in separate PlayStation and Xbox versions: check which one the listing is before you buy.
Not as a reason to pay more. Most gaming headsets have one driver per ear, so 7.1 is a virtual effect done in software, and PC and PS5 already include one with Windows Sonic and Tempest 3D Audio. Some players like it for placing sounds and others prefer plain stereo; comfort and a clear microphone make a bigger difference.
Go wireless if you want to move freely and the headset uses a 2.4 GHz receiver; go wired if you never want to charge it or you play through an Xbox controller jack. Battery life varies a lot between models, from about 30 to 300 hours on the headsets we compare, so check that figure on the spec sheet first.
