Our verdict
Our PS5 controller pick: replaceable stick modules, back paddles, adjustable trigger travel and profiles you switch mid-game, while keeping haptics and adaptive triggers. The catch is shorter battery life than the standard DualSense and a higher price.
Our analysis
Take the standard DualSense and add what it lacks: two back buttons against none, swappable stick modules against fixed sticks, and trigger travel with three stops against none. The Edge keeps the haptics and adaptive triggers of the regular pad, and pays for the extras with a shorter battery and a higher price. It is Sony's own pro controller for PS5, for people who play there seriously.
What stands out
- Replaceable stick modules. If a stick wears out, you swap the module instead of the whole controller, which changes the long-term math of a pricey pad.
- Two interchangeable back buttons. Jump, crouch or reload move to your middle fingers, so your thumbs stay on the sticks.
- Trigger travel with three stops. Shorten the pull for shooters where the first shot matters, or leave it long for driving and racing games.
- Profiles you switch without leaving the game. One setup for a shooter, another for a racing game, no menu diving between matches.
Where it falls short
- Battery life is shorter than the standard DualSense because of the extra electronics, and it costs more.
- It works on PC over USB-C and Bluetooth, but there the adaptive triggers only work in games that support them, so part of what you pay for can sit unused.
Look elsewhere if
- You mainly play on PC: the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 brings TMR sticks, triggers you can switch between Hall and tactile, two back buttons and a 2.4G connection. If you are on Xbox and battery life is your priority, the Xbox Elite Series 2 Core lists 40 hours and three-step hair trigger locks.
It closes our ranking of the best gaming controllers of 2026 as the PS5 pick, and our stick drift guide explains where swappable modules fit in.
