Samsung microSD Express Card 256GB for Nintendo Switch 2

Our analysis

What the WD_BLACK SN850P 2TB is for a PS5, this card is for a Switch 2: officially licensed storage in the only format the console accepts for games. On PS5 that is an M.2 Gen4 drive with a heatsink; on Switch 2 it is microSD Express, a newer and faster standard than regular microSD, and Samsung rates this 256 GB card at up to 800 MB/s reads. If you own a Switch 2 and want more room for games, it is not a nice extra.

What stands out

• The right standard. microSD Express is what the Switch 2 asks for, so buying this avoids a common mistake: sliding in your old Switch card and finding that the console will not use it for games.
• Official license. The spec sheet lists it as officially licensed for Nintendo Switch 2, so you do not have to guess about compatibility.
• Up to 800 MB/s reads, per Samsung. That is the microSD Express class Switch 2 asks for; neither Nintendo nor Samsung publishes load times against internal storage, so we do not promise them.
• 256 GB of extra space. Room to keep several big games installed instead of deleting one every time you download another.

Where it falls short

• There is no other format to fall back on: on Switch 2 it is Express or nothing for games.
• It is a single-purpose purchase; it does nothing for a PS5 or an Xbox.

Look elsewhere if

• Your Switch 2 has space to spare and what worries you is the screen once the console leaves the house: the Orzly hard case, with a padded panel over the screen and game card slots, is the better first buy.

We place it among the accessories each console really needs in our essential console accessories guide.
