Our analysis

Next to the GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE AX, a full ATX board with four RAM slots, three M.2 slots and 1 GbE, this micro-ATX B850 gives up two RAM slots and one M.2 and gets a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot for the graphics card and 2.5 GbE in return, with Wi-Fi 6E on both. It suits a tight-budget gaming build that does not need a stack of drives, in a smaller case.

What stands out

• BIOS Flashback. You can update the firmware with no processor installed, so a new Ryzen 9000 can start up even when the board left the warehouse on older firmware.
• Two DDR5 slots, rated to 8200+ MT/s with overclocking. Two slots is not a cut: top memory speeds are rated for two sticks anyway, and this board removes the temptation to fill four.
• One Gen5 and one Gen4 M.2. Plus four SATA ports, which covers a fast boot drive and a separate game drive.
• Networking without add-in cards. Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5 GbE come on the board.

Where it falls short

• With two RAM slots you cannot add memory later. Buy a two-stick kit at your final capacity, up to 128 GB.
• Only two M.2 slots, against three or four on the AM5 ATX boards we list.
• Its USB-C ports are USB 3.2 Gen 1, slower than the 20 Gbps rear port on the ASUS TUF B650E-PLUS.

Look elsewhere if
