Capture Cards · Elgato
Our verdict
The capture card to buy if you are not sure which one: 4K60 capture (HDR10 up to 1080p60 on Windows), low-latency passthrough and plug-and-play with OBS on PS5, Xbox and Switch 2. Only skip it if you need HDMI 2.1 passthrough at 120 Hz or more.
Our analysis
A step below it in Elgato's own range, the Elgato Game Capture Neo records at 1080p60, while the 4K S records up to 4K60 and passes the signal to your screen with low latency. It works plug and play with OBS on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, which makes it our pick for anyone starting to stream from a console and unsure which capture card fits.
What stands out
- 4K60 capture. The AVerMedia 4K60 passthrough card and the Game Capture Neo record at 1080p60; this one records in 4K.
- Passthrough up to 1440p120 and 1080p240. According to Elgato, the signal reaches your monitor with VRR, so you keep playing on a fast screen while the stream goes out.
- Plug and play. It connects over USB-C 3.0 and works with OBS, Streamlabs and even iPad without drivers to hunt down.
- Analog audio input. The 3.5 mm jack lets you bring in a separate audio source alongside the HDMI 2.0 video input.
Where it falls short
- Capturing in HDR10 tops out at 1080p60 and requires Windows. Your console can show 4K HDR on your TV, but what you record in HDR will be 1080p. For Twitch, which runs at 1080p, that is exactly enough.
- Its input is HDMI 2.0, so there is no 4K120 passthrough. If you need HDMI 2.1 speeds, look higher.
Look elsewhere if
You play fast shooters on a PS5 Pro or a high refresh monitor: the AVerMedia Live Gamer Ultra 2.1 offers real HDMI 2.1 passthrough, up to 4K144, 1440p240 and 1080p360. If you only stream at 1080p and want the lowest entry point, the AVerMedia 4K60 passthrough card keeps your TV picture in 4K HDR but records at 1080p60.
