Our verdict

AMD’s 3D V-Cache chip on AM5: eight cores and 104 MB of cache for the games that lean on the processor, like simulators and open worlds. If you are building on AM5 mainly to play and it is in stock, this is where we would put the processor budget.

Our analysis

Already own an LGA 1700 board? Then the comparison with the Intel Core i5-14400F ends there, because this chip needs AM5. On a new build, the spec sheets set 104 MB of cache against 20 MB and eight cores against ten, with a 120 W rating and no cooler in the box here against 65 W and a cooler included with the Intel.

What stands out

  • 104 MB of total cache. AMD stacks extra L3 on top of the chip. Games that keep pulling world data, like simulators and big open worlds, are the case a large cache is built for, because it saves trips to memory.
  • Eight Zen 4 cores, 16 threads. A 4.2 GHz base clock and up to 5.0 GHz boost, per AMD.
  • Radeon integrated graphics. You get a picture on AM5 even before the graphics card arrives.
  • 120 W rating. Size your cooler for that figure from day one.

Where it falls short

  • No cooler ships in the box, so budget for one.
  • Its successor, the 9800X3D, is already out, so stock of this one comes and goes. If it is sold out, skip third-party sellers asking extra.
  • Being AM5, it needs DDR5 memory.

Look elsewhere if

You want the newer generation: the Ryzen 7 9800X3D moves to Zen 5, places the cache under the cores, comes unlocked and boosts to 5.2 GHz. If your games are limited by the graphics card, or the X3D is out of stock, the Ryzen 5 9600X is the sensible pick on the same socket.
