Our verdict
The sane upgrade if you already own an LGA 1700 board with an i3 or an i5 up to the 12400F: ten cores, sixteen threads and a cooler in the box, with no integrated graphics. For a new build, the Ryzen 5 9600X on AM5 is where I would start.
Our analysis
This chip and the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 are the same kind of buy, a processor swap that keeps the motherboard you already own, and the platform decides between them: LGA 1700 here, AM4 there. On paper the Intel brings 10 cores and 16 threads against 6 and 12, while the Ryzen is unlocked and this one is not.
What stands out
- 10 cores, 16 threads. Six performance cores plus four efficiency cores, a 4.7 GHz boost and 20 MB of cache, per Intel.
- Drop-in on LGA 1700. If a 12th- or 13th-gen board is already in the case, maybe with DDR4, the chip is the only part that changes.
- Cooler in the box. It ships with Intel's Laminar RM1 for its 65 W base power, so the upgrade is the chip alone.
- No integrated graphics. The F means no iGPU, which a PC with a graphics card does not use.
Where it falls short
- Intel's newer desktop chips use LGA 1851, so this is the last upgrade an LGA 1700 board takes.
- The multiplier is locked, so there is no overclocking.
- Without integrated graphics, a PC whose graphics card fails shows no picture until another card goes in.
Look elsewhere if
You are building from scratch: the AMD Ryzen 5 9600X sits on AM5, is unlocked and boosts to 5.4 GHz, though it ships without a cooler. If the games you play lean on the processor and the budget stretches, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D brings 104 MB of cache against 20 MB here.
We rank it by socket in best CPU for gaming in 2026, and the 2-minute CPU bottleneck test helps you confirm the processor is really your problem before you spend anything.
